Fitness clothing and gear are highly personal and always involve a balance of cost, fit, durability, plus personal preference. What works great for one person can often inspire only indifference or even misery for another. With that in mind, I’d like to share some of my favorite things and would love to hear about yours.
I really enjoy listening to music when I lift or mountain bike and podcasts when I run. But, I always stuck with corded headset because I thought the Bluetooth ones were kind of dumb. They tend to look both bulky and delicate and usually have those earbuds that block important sounds and trap sweat in your ears.
Then, when my wife and I upgraded our phones a while back, we were given store credit for trading in our old phones. On a whim, and needing only so many chargers and phone cases, I threw in this Plantronics headset. Actually, my wife is the one who saw them. Judging by the dust and completely hard to see location, I’m probably the only one to ever buy a set from that store.
It was love at first use. They are reasonably light, comfortable, stay put, and provide decent sound but don’t block important noises (like that car coming up behind you). They don’t get in the way when lifting or wearing a bike helmet, seem impervious to sweat and light rain, and have enough range I can set my phone in one place while lifting or working in the garage. Also, they are unobtrusive and don’t draw attention or look stupid. Plus, battery life is up to eight hours.
Downsides? It doesn’t have (or I haven’t found) controls to repeat a track. You can play/pause/skip forward, but not go back. Not a huge deal, but when I get in a groove with a great song I sometimes like to repeat it (several times). That’s it.
In fairness, I’ve never used any other wireless headsets so I really can’t compare them to anything but the corded ones I used to use. There may be something better out there, but if these ever get lost or die, I can’t say I’ll bother looking. They work so well for me, I’ll immediately have a replacement set en route.
